Christianity Should Be Contagious

“Contagious” is usually a bad word. Colds are contagious. Yawns are contagious. Complaining — extremely contagious.

But enthusiasm is contagious too. Joy is contagious. And here’s the question this post is built on: when’s the last time someone caught something good from you?

Prefer to watch? Here’s the 60-second version:

Excitement Leaks — Let It

I’m not just talking about literal evangelism. Every part of our lives should be shining the light of Christ. When we read something interesting, encouraging, or challenging in the Bible — we can and should tell people. Same when we hear something that stirs us from the pulpit, or a Christian book, a Christian song, or a podcast. Talk about God. Show your excitement to everyone.

Think about how naturally we already do this for everything else. Find a great taco place, and you’ll tell three people by Friday — unprompted, unembarrassed, with genuine joy. We evangelize for TV shows, sports teams, and air fryers without a second thought. So why do we go quiet about the God of the universe? It’s that we never noticed the absurdity: unlimited enthusiasm for lunch, hushed tones for our Lord and Savior.

“As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20 NIV)

That’s Peter and John, fresh out of custody, told by the authorities to stop talking about Jesus. Their answer isn’t defiance for its own sake — it’s honesty: we cannot help it. What fills you leaks out of you. Contagious wasn’t their strategy; it was their condition.

For the Sake of Those Who Don’t Know Him

For our friends who don’t know God yet, think of it this way: if you saw a super cute little puppy tied behind a car, and the owner was about to get in the driver’s seat and drive away — wouldn’t you go through superheroic steps to get that driver’s attention? You’d yell. You’d wave your arms. You’d sprint across a parking lot without one thought about looking silly.

Eternity without God is a far more serious issue — and our perspective and behavior should reflect that. Nobody at that parking lot would say “well, the leash is really the owner’s private business.”

Love doesn’t stay polite about danger.

For the Sake of Those Who Do

And for our brothers and sisters in Christ, think of it this way: if your brother was suffering with a fever and you had ibuprofen in your bag, would you keep silent — or offer it? If your sister fell and broke her leg, would you quietly hope she figures something out — or get her some help?

We have a mighty God on our side, but our sin natures win far too often — discouragement, isolation, spiritual fatigue. Your shared excitement about God is medicine you’re already carrying. When we share what He’s doing, it can:

  • Help a struggling believer remember what they’re missing
  • Encourage them to persevere through — or conquer — what they’re facing
  • Sharpen them, as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17)
  • Disciple them, helping them grow spiritually
  • Give them a living example to follow

Contagious Without Being Obnoxious

Now, we’ve all met the version of this that goes wrong — the pressure, the pouncing, the conversation that was secretly an ambush. That’s not what this is. Contagion doesn’t spread through pressure; it spreads through joy. Nobody has ever been badgered into wanting what you have — but plenty of people have watched someone genuinely lit up and thought, “whatever that is, I might want it.”

So the practice is almost embarrassingly simple: one overflow sentence, said naturally, the way you’d mention anything else you love. “I read something this morning that’s been stuck in my head all day.” “Our pastor said something Sunday that honestly changed how I’m handling this week.” Then let the conversation do what conversations do. You’re not closing a sale — you’re being contagious and letting the Holy Spirit handle transmission. He’s very good at it.

Here’s this week’s challenge: one overflow sentence a day. Whatever God showed you in the morning — the worksheet’s Word section is a ready supply — say one sentence about it to one person before dinner. That’s it. Watch what spreads.

God is AWESOME! Let's spend time with Him!
