Names of God #2: Jehovah Jireh, The LORD Will Provide

Second in a series on the names of God. Start with El Roi if you missed it.

There’s a detail in Genesis 22 that shakes me every time I read it. Abraham is walking up a mountain to sacrifice his son, and he’s carrying the wood, and the fire, and the knife. Everything needed for a sacrifice, except the sacrifice.

And Isaac, who is old enough to carry a load of firewood up a mountain, is old enough to notice.

Prefer to watch? Here’s the 60-second version:

“Where Is the Lamb?”

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” (Genesis 22:7 NIV)

I’ve tried to imagine what that question does to a father, and I can’t quite get there. Abraham has been walking three days with this. He knows what he’s been asked to do, and now the son he’s been asked to give up is walking beside him, helpfully pointing out the one thing missing.

Abraham’s answer is, I think, the most faith-filled sentence in the Old Testament: “God Himself will provide the lamb.”

Notice that he doesn’t say “I don’t know.” He doesn’t stall or explain or soften it. He makes a claim about God’s character while walking uphill toward the worst moment of his life, which is not the same thing as optimism, since optimism generally wants some evidence first. This is a man trusting Someone he had come to know well enough to bet a son on.

A Ram in the Thicket

God does provide, at the last possible second, with the knife already raised: a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. Abraham names the place Jehovah Jireh, The LORD Will Provide.

Here’s the part I love. He names it in the future tense. Not “the LORD provided,” past tense, one time, on this mountain, thank goodness that’s behind us. Will provide. He took a single rescue and turned it into a permanent statement about who God is, and he did it long before he had any way of knowing how right he was going to turn out to be.

Because two thousand years later, on a hill in the same region, God provided again. That time the Lamb was His own Son, and nobody stopped the knife. The ram was never the whole provision. It was the preview.

What This Doesn’t Mean

I want to be careful here, because this name gets misused fairly often. Jehovah Jireh is not a promise that God will provide the specific thing you asked for, on your timeline, in the shape you had pictured. Abraham didn’t get a note in advance explaining the plan. He got three days of silence, a hard climb, and a provision that showed up so late that nobody could reasonably call it a coincidence.

What the name promises is that provision is part of who God is, and not an exception He makes when circumstances get bad enough. Sometimes it’s a ram. Sometimes it’s strength you didn’t know you had, or a person who shows up at the right hour, or a bill that gets covered from a direction you weren’t watching. And once, decisively, it was His Son.

Worship Him by Name

Take this one into your worship this week. In the Worship section of the daily worksheet, praise Him by this name specifically: “Jehovah Jireh, You are the God who provides. You provided when…” and then finish that sentence honestly, with real things from your own life. Most of us have more entries for that list than we can remember on a given morning, which is probably an argument for writing them down.

Then do what Abraham did, and say the other half out loud: “And I trust that You will provide for…” — the thing you’re carrying right now, the one without an answer yet. That’s the future tense he used on the mountain, and it’s worship too. Maybe the harder kind.

And if you happen to be three days into a climb right now with no ram in sight, I’d gently suggest that’s not evidence He isn’t Jehovah Jireh. Abraham’s ram was in that thicket the whole time; he just couldn’t see it from where he was walking.
